Google Search Console is a SEO monitoring service created by the largest search engine in the world. It looks like a traditional webmaster’s panel. The tool monitors web pages indexing, detects errors that block growth in SERP and provides valuable information on optimizing. First steps

In order to start working with Google Search Console, first of all, you need to add the site to the panel, confirming your rights to it. The user can add his website in two ways: as an URL or as a domain. In the second case, the system will monitor information about the entire domain, including all available protocols and subdomains.

The way a site is verified depends on the format it is added to Search-google-com. When adding a resource with as an URL, the user will be offered the following confirmation options:

  • adding an HTML file to the website;
  • introduction of an HTML tag;
  • using Google Analytics (you need access rights to your account);
  • using Google Tag Manager (you need the rights to publish the Tag Manager container);
  • using your domain registrar.

Now let’s talk about each menu in more detail.


The overview menu contains basic information about the number of clicks to the site from SERP, the dynamics of indexing and the problems that hinder SEO-promotion. At the top of the page there is a search box where you can inspect any URL of the monitored website. The overview page includes a performance graph that shows clicks from web searches by date, a coverage graph, and a website quality graph that includes desktop and mobile page usability. In addition, there is an improvement panel on the overview page, where the main bugs are indicated.


In this section you can select a time period and track statistics on such indicators as:

  • Number of clicks;
  • Number of impressions;
  • Average CTR;
  • Average position in SERP.

Below you can see all search queries, with the number of clicks and impressions, as well as with a layout:

  • by pages;
  • by country;
  • by device;
  • by dates;
  • by type in search.

In the performance panel, you can set up a filter to track not only organic traffic, but also images, videos and news.

URL inspection

The URL inspection menu lets you get information about the indexing of a specific page of a promoted site. When checking an individual URL, you will be shown all the main problems of a particular page, indicating such data as:

  • Coverage;
  • Referring pages;
  • Sitemap files;
  • Date of the last scan;
  • A number of other parameters.

There are also two additional sections here: mobile friendliness with error indication (such as close proximity of interactive elements, small print, etc.) and navigation bars (including information about crawls and detected elements).


This submenu includes three tools: coverage, sitemaps and deletion.

The Coverage tool contains:

  • error pages;
  • pages without errors, but warnings;
  • error-free pages;
  • excluded pages (not indexed on purpose).

The system monitors a variant of pages with the canonical tag, redirects, noindex pages, non-indexed scanned pages, blocked by robots file pages, detected and non-indexed pages, 404 errors and a number of other parameters.

The Sitemap tool lets you add a sitemap file for review. The Removal tool shows temporary removals, obsolete content and safe search filtering.


There are three tools in this submenu: page usability, basic internet metrics and mobile usability. In the page usability section you can see the proportion of pages on the site that meet Google’s usability requirements. Also here are the so-called “Page Experience Signals” with an indication of the https use and the main indicators.

In the “Key Internet Metrics” section, you can see the number of effective and ineffective URLs, as well as those you need to increase the loading speed for. The data is presented for personal computers and mobile devices.

In the section “Mobile friendliness” the user can track errors related to the display of the page on mobile devices. This may be the proximity of interactive elements, small print or other errors.


Another important section, where there are two points: the AMP page and the navigation bars. If you use AMP technology on your site, then in the corresponding menu you will see the dynamics of pages analysis for this parameter. The section “Navigation bars” provides similar information on the corresponding parameter.

Security Issues and Manual Measures

In this small submenu you will see appropriate warnings in case of security errors. If everything is done correctly then you will see a message stating that no problems were found.

Google Search Console is a basic webmaster tool that is extremely useful for understanding the dynamics of a website’s progress in the largest search engine in the world. With its help you can easily track errors and abnormal changes on the website or in the search index.
